I love these little cookies. They're easy to make and can add color to a party platter of sweets. Traditionally made in red and green for Christmas, they're great for other holidays too.
3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1-1/2 cups butter softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Food Coloring of choice
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
In a mixing bowl beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Mix in egg, then milk, vanilla and almond extract. Gradually mix in baking powder and flour until well blended. Fill a cookie press with dough and squeeze out the shapes you want on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 10 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool a few minutes on the cookie sheet and then transfer to a cooling rack or on wax paper on the counter top. (Makes about 100 small cookies)
Optional: Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar.
2 teaspoons milk
Food coloring of choice
cocoa powder
Mix just enough milk into powdered sugar to make an icing. If too runny add more powdered sugar, if too stiff add milk. Make sure to make adjustments after food coloring is added (or cocoa powder if you want a choclate glaze).
Either spread on cookie or pipe on from a pastry bag.
