Yellow Daffodils In My Yard

2015 Blogging from A to Z Challenge

Saying I'm a writer is just one way I define myself. I'm also a jewelry seller, a decorator, a foodie, a cook and so much more. I didn't have to think long on what theme to use for this year's challenge. Spring is the start of gardening for me, so let's talk about what's In My Yard .

Yellow Daffodils

Regardless of the weather, my daffodils always bloom. My house is over 100 years old, so I have no idea how many years these daffodils have been spreading. They pop up everywhere in the yard, be it flowerbed, lawn or driveway.

I always say I'm going to gather the stranglers and get them into beds, but then I think, how much more natural for them to grow just the way the previous owners saw them, surprised by where they spring up.

I'm thinking for next year I'd like to plant the newer varieties and colors. They have much bigger flowers.

Wisteria

I planted this is 2008. It's pink wisteria. Though I have plenty of lavender wisteria growing everywhere as well.

Vines

I have honeysuckle vines and dewberry vines and blackberry vines and morning glory vines and vines that have no name. My favorite are my concord grape vines. As you see, they are slow to bloom.

Gnomes are my passion for yard decor. This one sits in a woodsy setting.

Onions

I've planted bulb onions and bunching onions in my garden. In my yard I have wild onions. I tend to chew on them when laying in the grass, but until I took a picture of them, I began wondering if I shouldn't harvest them and store in the freezer for adding to meals.

Nandinas In My Yard

Nandina

Also known as Heavenly Bamboo or Sacred Bamboo. It is native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan. All parts of the plant are poisonous, but then so are azaleas, daffodils and a plethora of other plants in most yards. We just never think about it. I have Nandinas around my house as foundation plants because they are evergreen.

Monkey Grass In My Yard

Monkey Grass

I love this plant. It's a versatile, quick growing ground cover. I use it around trees, along walks, as borders to flowerbeds and filler for small areas. Once this stuff grows into a mass, nothing will grow through it.

Knick Knacks

I have hundreds of knick knacks in my house, so what not clutter up my yard too. I've reduced my collection over the years, but I still have a few lingering, looking worn out.

Hyacinths in my Garden

Hyacinths

Have you ever smelled one. I love this fragrant scent so much, I'll search them out in the grocery store and stick my nose in one. Let's not think of how many other noses were in that flower too.

This year, I was looking for my gardening gloves and came across a pot under a bunch of other junk that had a green nub of a shoot sticking up. I remember this pot sitting there last year too, but it was just dirt. So where did the green nub come from?

I considered it was a petrified stub of an old flower. It had a nameplate for a hyacinth. Gosh, I hadn't bought one in years. So I decided to bring it in the kitchen and water it to see what happens.

Four weeks later I noticed more stubby shoots. Then it took shape. Oh wow, I'm really going to have a hyacinth.

Well you can see it started blooming. It's my favorite color - a lovely shade of lavender (which happens to be to color of my bathroom walls). It also has that flowery scent I love. This year instead of being forgotten on a shelf, I've planted it in the flowerbed. I don't know why I didn't do this the year I bought it.

Greenhouse In My Yard

Greenhouse

Okay, so we never claimed to be quick moving around here. In the spring of 2012 I bought a 10 x 12 greenhouse kit.

Well it laid there in a box in the yard for two years. Then we got started on putting it together. I think I spent a week walking around trying to decide the best location, for light, for convenience, for practicality, and most of all for where I could keep it forever, because we've been known to move a lot of things around, mostly bushes, flower bulbs and fences--lots of fences.

So, as I was saying, we got started. Then other projects seemed to get in the way of finishing the greenhouse. We had the base in place and a partial frame. If you ever under-take building a greenhouse from a kit, do not quit at this point. Windy storms shook loose parts, metal bent and bolts came undone, never to be seen again.

This year, my son decided he wanted to see the greenhouse finished. So for several months, he has added parts, piecing back the bent structure, assembling the new and we finally saw it look like a greenhouse. What our plans with it will be are yet undetermined.

Apple Trees

Apple trees have come and gone over the years. When we first moved here, we didn't realized we couldn't let the horses around the trees without protection to the trunks. The horses chewed the bark, the sap ran and the trees died.

We saved some, planted more and then had a similar problem with the goats. This year I have planted a whole new orchard since I only have one Golden Delicious tree left and one Horse Apple tree (that's falling down). My 12 new trees are Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala, & Granny Smith.

What do I make with so many apples? We love homemade apple pie, applesauce and apple jelly. This year I'm going to give making apple butter a try.

A Black Thumb

Hi everyone, and thanks Brenda for having me as a guest today.

I love to grow things, but not everything likes to grow for me. This year I planted a number of plants that just died.

A blueberry plant, I set out in early spring. Looked good great at the beginning and even had a few blueberries on it. Then wanting to help it, I put some fertilizer on it. The thing almost died in a week, only had two little leaves on it (as shown above).

Hoping to save it, I relocated it to a new spot and it is still green, but no new growth. So what have I learned? That with my black thumb, I have to keep trying new plants and don’t give them too much care.
