Autumn is sneaking into the mountains. The upper leaves of the maples are tipped with red thanks to the clear, crisp night. The cloudless sky has deepened to that perfect shade of blue only seen in late September and October. There’s a hint of spice in the breeze, a harbinger of the carpet about to cover my lawn. I love this season, and yet this year I’m trading a week of perfect weather for warmer climes. We’re heading out on a
It’s been a while since we traveled - 2001 to be exact. But
this October my partner crosses the six-year mark of being cancer-free and
we’re getting away for a few days. Whether or not we’ll survive being cooped up
in a car together is a question I won’t be able to answer until we return.
I’d say “all joking aside” but who’s sure I’m kidding? Not
me. Even after twenty years, some things test a relationship. That’s something
not always evident in the stories I write, and that stage of a partnership is
something I’ve only recently thought about more fully exploring.
We all love the blush of first attraction and first magical
kiss. We crave the intensity of being in the arms of a lover for the first
time. As we settle into a pairing, we sense that intensity shift. We often
think it weakens when in truth it has simply matured with us. That maturity adds layer after nuanced layer,
which, if we embrace it, enriches our lives together.
We’ll survive our vacation. Driving time is talking time,
and we’ve yet to run out of topics for conversation. I’ll watch the scenery
along the way and take note of the differences as we get closer to our
destination. And when we return home, it will be a return to the season I love
best - autumn.
